The Delhi Ophthalmological Society was formed on 4th May, 1948 after the 9th AIOS conference held at Delhi. The reception committee of the AIOS conference consisted of Dr. S.N. Mitter as the organizing secretary and Dr. Tejpal Saini as assistant secretary. All the Ophthalmologists of Delhi became members of the organizing committee. After the conference all the Reception Committee members were enrolled as founder members of the newly formed Delhi Ophthalmological Society (DOS). Dr. Tej Pal Saini was elected as convener of the society. Dr. D.D. Kapoor, Dr. D.C. Loomba and Dr. Bodh Raj Sabharwal were requested to draft the constitution.

The first Executive Committee was elected as under:

  President : Dr. Harsukh Rai
  Vice President : Dr. K.N. Tandon
  Secretary cum Treasurer : Dr. Tej Pal Saini
  Members : Dr. B.R. Sabharwal
      Dr. B.R. Gupta

Membership started with 13 founder members of DOS in the year 1948. Membership increased at a slow pace initially and there were 118 members in 1976, which increased to 450 members in 1993. Subsequently there was an increase in the membership with addition of more members not only from neighboring states but also from far off places. The present membership is around 6,300 members from all over India and is the second largest ophthalmic society in the country.

Objects :

1. The cultivation and promotion of science of Ophthalmology.
2. To co-ordinate the activities and foster collaboration amongst the ophthalmologists of Delhi. To promote a feeling of brotherhood amongst the members.
3. To co-ordinate with the activities of various established Associations/Societies of medical discipline.
4. Supervising and advising on legislation affecting Ophthalmic practice, Ophthalmologist and the science of Ophthalmology.
5. To undertake all such activities that may promote the furtherance of the above mentioned objects.
